The Registrar of Imported Vehicles was established by statute
(Motor Vehicle Safety Act) to manage the registration, inspection and certification of used U.S. specification vehicles being imported into Canada. The Registrar determines the eligibility of a vehicle to be imported into Canada, and what modifications are necessary to bring the vehicle into compliance with equivalent Canadian Motor Vehicle Safety Standards.
The Registrar researches available U.S. jurisdictional databases to verify the branding history of a vehicle to the fullest extent possible, thereby helping to prevent unsafe “non rebuildable” vehicles from ending up being licensed on Canadian roads.
